Abscess

When a bacterial infection in the bone or gums takes hold, a tooth abscess can form. An abscess is a pocket of puss that can look like a boil or pimple and affects the nearby tooth. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and teeth.

Symptoms of an abscessed tooth include

Sharp or shooting pain
Gnawing or throbbing pain
The pain radiates to the jawbone, neck, or ear
Bitter mouth taste
Gum redness and swelling
Is Emergency Dental Repair Necessary?

Broken, Chipped or Cracked Tooth Repair

Tooth repair is essential to avoid bacteria getting inside the tooth or gums, causing infection, and treatments like a root canal. Even a knocked out tooth can potentially be saved if seen within a reasonable amount of time. Depending on the severity of the crack or fracture, we have different treatment plans to remedy the damage and leave your smile looking as good as before

Why an Emergency Dentist Is Needed

Exposed Nerve: If the break is significantly deep, the tooth's nerve can be exposed and cause immediate pain and sensitivity to hot and cold.
Further Damage: Without cracked tooth repair or chipped tooth repair, the damage can spread and lead to more complex treatments needed.
Risk of Infection: Cracks and chips in the tooth allow bacteria to enter easily and can lead to an abscess or infection.
A More Serious Injury: If a damaged tooth is bleeding, it could signal a more serious injury that should be examined.

Swelling

Swelling may not seem like an emergency situation without an injury to go with it, but it can indicate a serious dental issue that cannot be readily seen without a dentist looking.

If you have swelling along with heat, redness, inflammation, puss, or drainage in an oral area, contact our office immediately.

When Pain Signals an Emergency

When Pain Signals an Emergency

Pain can be a difficult indicator of whether or not you're experiencing a dental emergency. When in doubt you can call to find out. A toothache is a general term for pain in the teeth and can result from multiple causes.

Generally, a toothache is associated with a tooth dying and is accompanied by extreme temperature sensitivity, throbbing, and jaw pain. The symptoms typically make sleeping, working, or other day-to-day tasks difficult due to the pain.

If experiencing a toothache, an urgent assessment is required and antibiotics may be needed.
